"chaos theory describes the behavior of certain nonlinear dynamicalsystems that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initialconditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As aresult of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponentialgrowth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior ofchaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though thesesystems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics arefully defined by their initial conditions, with no random elementsinvolved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simplychaos."
